For some people the idea of paying someone else to move their own belongings from one home to another just doesn't seem like an option, they prefer to do it themselves with a few friends or the whole family. The benefit to doing it by yourself is basically saving the cost of paying an expensive moving company, though moving home can take quite a lot of time and effort. One great tool that needs to be included in the process is the furniture dolly, this simple contraption will make easy work of even the largest piece of furniture you own and greatly speed things up.
Most of the large moving companies have a number of different furniture dolly devices on hand, some have ropes to pull the furniture from place to place and others have specially deigned edge to easily slide under large items. Whatever special feature the dolly might have they all do the same thing; make moving large objects easier and quicker. With furniture dolly one person is able to move a large item such as a fridge or dining table without any other help. If you are new to home moving you might not be familiar with the dolly tool, it is basically a flat board made of wood or a rectangular frame made from metal or plastic. This then rests on 4 swivel coaster wheels, which add extra maneuverability to the device.
Wheel Casters
For those of you that are planning to move for the first time in the near future, here are 3 examples of the furniture dolly types you should expect to find at your local home depot and how they differ:
(1) Furniture leg type - this type of furniture dolly looks like a small metal triangle with a swivel wheel in each corner, in the center is a small hole to fit the table, bed or sofa leg. A person can easily lift up each leg of a specific item and slide this device underneath, once 2 - 3 have been put into position it is very easy for a single person to move a furniture item that is 3 - 4 time their weight.
(2) Carpeted solid type - Moving furniture around can take its toll on some of your more delicate pieces of furniture; you want to avoid scratching antiques in particular. To prevent doing too much damage to the bottom and sides, this special furniture dolly has a thick layer of soft carpet over the top of the platform; this also prevents you from hurting your legs on the sharp sides and corners.
(3) Rubber end type - This form of furniture dolly is based on the standard design, made from hard wood and resting on swivel coaster wheels, the difference is that it has a layer of rubber material covering the surface of the platform. This layer not only protects your furniture from scratches, and your legs from injury, it also grips the item strongly ensuring that it doesn't slip off the dolly during transport.
