Every day as we go about our lives, we make use of thousands of various conveniences and inventions that make our lives easier and more efficient. Often we don't even give them a second thought. Toe, Caster, and Camber - Aligning Your Vehicle's Wheels

The straighter your car's tires are aligned, the longer they'll last and the more responsive they'll be to your steering commands. Under ideal circumstances, the wheels should be be directed straight ahead, parallel to each other and perpendicular to their respective axles. The problem is, they periodically edge out of alignment and need to be adjusted. Otherwise, you'll notice premature tread wear, which means you'll need to replace the tires sooner. You'll also notice pulling, vibrating, or a sluggish response while you're on the road.

Wheel alignment is primarily based on three factors: toe, camber, and caster. Each of these factors addresses the angles of your vehicle's wheels, though they do so from different perspectives. This article will introduce you to toe, camber, and caster, so you'll understand what might be causing your treads to wear prematurely.

Proper Toe Alignment

In terms of tread wear, toe has a more significant effect than camber or caster. Toe is a measurement of the angle in which your tires are pointing when viewed from directly above. As noted, your tires should be aligned so they are parallel to one another. This is known as zero toe. If the front of your tires point inward toward each other, there is "toe-in." If the back of the tires point inward, there is "toe-out." Both circumstances will cause a feathering pattern in the treads.

Because your car's suspension system has a bit of "give," the alignment of your wheels will change slightly when you drive. For this reason, your mechanic will align them with a small amount of "toe-in" or "toe-out" in order to offset the effect.

Proper Camber Alignment

Camber reflects the manner in which the tops of your wheels tilt when viewed from the front. If the tops tilt inward toward the center of your vehicle, camber is said to be negative. If they tilt outward, it is said to be positive. In both cases, you'll eventually notice premature wear on the shoulders of the treads.

Similar to toe, the tilt of your tires changes slightly when you drive. In fact, these tiny changes occur continuously as you drive over bumps and dips. This is due to your suspension system; the struts and arms move to compensate for variances in the road. Their movement causes changes in camber.

Proper Caster Alignment

Caster measures the tilt of your steering axis when you are looking at it from your vehicle's left or right side. The ideal setting is when the axis is perpendicular to the road. If it is tilted toward the rear of your car, caster is said to be positive. If it tilts forward, it is said to be negative.

Unlike toe and camber, caster does not have a direct influence on the wear of your treads. Instead, it affects steering response. Even though the ideal setting is perpendicular, mechanics will usually set camber slightly positive. The reason is that doing so improves the response of your wheels to your steering commands without sacrificing stability.

The Importance Of Periodic Checks

The alignment of your vehicle's wheels will change as parts in the suspension system wear out. These parts include the struts and control arms, which play an important role in maintaining the proper alignment. Thus, plan to have a mechanic align your wheels on a regular basis (once a year is usually sufficient). If you neglect to do so, your treads will wear down prematurely, needlessly forcing you to invest in a set of replacement tires.

There are other factors that play a part in your vehicle's wheel alignment. These include your car's ride height, thrust angle, and "set back." However, toe, camber, and caster are the three main measurements to note.

What is a wheel alignment? How does it effect handling and tire wear? When should I do an alignment? What causes alignments to go out? How would I know if my alignment is out?

Wheel Casters

A wheel alignment is nothing more than setting the angle of the hub/wheel so it tracks in the right direction. Most vehicles have four-wheel alignments, meaning each of the four wheels is separately aligned. Your basic alignment consists of three angles: camber, caster and toe-in. Camber is the tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of the car. Positive camber means the top of the tire is tilted away from the car. Negative camber means the top is tilted in. Camber has a lot to do with cornering performance. Too much negative camber will wear the inside of the tires prematurely. Too much positive camber will wear the outside tread.

Wheel Casters

Caster is the inclination of the front spindle. Picture the angle of the forks on a bike top to bottom. When the caster is out, it creates a pull or wandering condition and sometimes a slow responding steering wheel. Toe-in is measured in inches or degrees. Viewing from the front of the car, it is the difference between the front and rear center-line of the tire. Toe-in means the fronts of the tires are closer together. Toe-out means, the fronts of the tires are farther apart. Toe-in or out has the most effect on tire wear.

When your car is out of alignment, the tires will wear prematurely. In some extreme cases, new tires will be gone within 500 miles. At the price of tires, especially high performance tires with soft compounds, you want to keep your vehicle in alignment as long as possible. Other symptoms of an out-of-alignment car are poor handling, pulling to one side, or wandering from side-to-side. An alignment will also affect the steering wheel response and how quickly it returns to the center.

Your vehicle's alignment should be checked every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Any harsh impact such as potholes, curbs, objects in the road, or the damage of an accident, should prompt you to have your alignment checked. If you do any modifications to your suspension, raising or lowering your car, that will affect the alignment angles. Even changing the tire size will effect the alignment. Loose, worn or bent suspension parts such as ball joints, springs, bushings, and control arms will have an adverse affect on your alignment, too. In most cases you do not know if your alignment is out. The best way to check it is with a precision alignment machine. Laser optics combined with a computer allow for the most accuracy in alignment readings.

Remember you are aligning the hub of your vehicle. Check to see if the alignment shop or dealer has equipment that attaches to the hub, not the wheel. Many independent shops that do alignments have a specialty tool called "Tru Align" that attaches to the hub. This will make for a much more accurate alignment with the added bonus of not damaging the delicate finish on your wheels.

There is a lot more to suspension alignment, especially if you push your vehicle on the track. The modifications you make on your suspension are just the beginning. Once you start down this road you will be concerned with things like bump steer, weighting (vertical load), preloading, tire traction versus tire load, and more. Now you're thinking under-steer, over-steer, tire compound, sway bar design, and other topics that can be covered in a later article. For now, just remember to have your vehicle aligned every 10,000 to 12,000 miles in normal driving conditions.

If you accidentally hit a curb, or drive through a nasty pothole or other road obstruction, that would be a cue to have your car's alignment checked more often. Proper alignment is good for your car. It will save unnecessary wear on your tires. It will ensure that your vehicle is giving you the handling the factory designed the car to have. And, most importantly, a properly aligned car is safer and more fun to drive.

Being a former employee of a music company's distribution division, I have experienced first hand what can happen when you decide to go cheap or get lazy and not do your homework. Moving everything from light keyboards with attached stands to church organs to nine foot grand pianos you have got to be prepared for the environments you will be working in. You find out real quick how costly it can be when you neglect to do your homework or just go cheap. Prime example... Our manager purchased and put together a new dollie with questionable plastic wheels. The dollie sat in a truck during a freezing cold winter night. The next morning we arrived at one of our warehouses to pick up a custom seven foot grand piano made to order. As my fellow worker and I used the new dollie to transfer the piano into the truck, one of the new plastic casters shattered from the severe cold, throwing the custom seven foot grand piano abruptly to the ground. The damage was catastrophic! The customer was irate. The company had to take the hit and order a new piano and in the end the manager was no longer our manager.

Wheel Casters

Two major questions you need to ask yourself prior to purchasing casters would be...

1. What will you be using it for? Yes, I know, for moving, but moving what? Are they particularly heavy items?

2. What is the environment you will be mostly using it in? Will it be used outside as much as inside, on tile, or on carpet?

With so many wheel/caster options available, it can be quite the challenge to make a selection for your application. Let's cover the first few important steps prior to purchasing caster wheels for your application.

First and foremost is Caster Capacity. The caster capacity is the total weight an individual caster can support. In order to figure which caster capacity best suits your application you must follow this equation... Divide the total weight of the maximum load you will be needing the casters for by the number of casters you are going to attach to the dollie. Now choose the caster with a caster capacity greater than or equal to your result.

There are guidelines for regarding types of casters and floor surface ratings that should be taken into consideration.

Asphalt: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended for use on asphalt.

Concrete: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good for use, and Iron or Semi-Steel are a fair choice.

Tile: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are fair, and Iron or Semi-Steel should not be used.

Hardwood Flooring: Rubber, Polyurethane and Semi to Full Pneumatics are excellent, Phenolic (molded plastic) and Polyolefin are good, and Iron or Semi-Steel are not recommended what so ever.

Carpets: Polyurethane, Semi to Full Pneumatics, Phenolic (molded plastic), and Polyolefin are all good for use, but Iron or Semi-Steel can cut in and not get very good grip while transferring.

Office Chair Casters - No Need to Reinvent the Wheel

Every week you sit in the same office or cubicle in the same chair, you and the chair act as one. One day you roll back and it happens, a loud crack and the chair tilts to one side. Why get rid of the whole chair when you can simply replace all four of your office chair casters.

A good chair is hard to come by. If you have had the chair for a long time, a replacement is likely no longer available. The casters on the other hand, can be purchased separately and replaced.

"I found the perfect chair but the wheels are too small". It may not roll properly or dig into the carpet in your office but the chair itself is very comfortable. This is the time to look for new office chair casters that fit, but with slightly bigger wheels.

Trying to push back on an office chair that does not roll right can actually be a workplace hazard. If the wheels jam, you and the chair could possibly tip over. You can simply place a hard plastic carpet protector where your chair is and it will probably roll ok. If you confine yourself to that three foot by three foot square, you most likely will be fine. If you are like most, you will push your chair across your office rather than get up if it what you need is only a few feet away.

Replacing your office chair casters not only extends the life of the chair, it alleviates a possible safety issue. It will also save on wear and tear on the carpet by rolling properly across it instead of digging in. Ordering a new set is easy and actually replacing them only takes a couple minutes of your time.
